Sarah G. Baker (1839-1912) was born in Bedford, Ohio, and died in
Cleveland, Ohio. In 1857 she married George A. Baker who worked in the oil industry. She
first studied Christian Science with Bradford Sherman, a student of Mary Baker Eddy's,
and subsequently studied with Eddy herself, first in the Normal class in October 1886
and then the Obstetrics class in October 1888. An 1889 notice in
The
Christian Science Journal referred to Baker as "the pioneer Christian
Scientist of Cleveland." She incorporated the Cleveland Christian Science Association in
1887, helped organize a Christian Science Church there in 1888, and served as President
of Students' Christian Scientist Association No. 29. Baker was a Christian Science
practitioner and teacher listed in
The Christian Science
Journal from 1887 until 1892. There is no record of her uniting with The First
Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts.
