Arthur R. Atkins (1829-1884) was born in Jefferson, Ohio, and died in
Chicago, Illinois. For many years, he was a steamboat captain based in Cleveland, Ohio,
and then Chicago, and specialized in the navigation of the Great Lakes. After retiring
from sailing, he founded a marine insurance agency, Atkins, Beckwith & Fleming.
There is no record of him studying with Mary Baker Eddy or uniting with the Church of
Christ (Scientist).
