Edward P. Adams (1842-1920) was born in Gilead, Maine, and died in
Alameda, California. He worked as a telegraph operator and agent for the Central Pacific
Railroad and resided in various states throughout his life, including Maine, New
Hampshire, Utah, and California. He was married to Emma E. Williams in 1868 until her
death, and then married Mary Spencer in 1899. Adams was a student of Mary Baker Eddy's,
completing the Primary class in November 1885 and joining the Christian Scientist
Association in December. He joined The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston,
Massachusetts, on April 4, 1896. After studying with Eddy, he had intended to leave his
job with the railroad and work as a Christian Science practitioner. Records suggest that
he continued to work for the railroad and was never listed in the directory of
The Christian Science Journal.
