In September 1888, Mary Baker Eddy's student Mary H. Collins wrote to Eddy with a request to have a marble bust of Eddy made by American artist Luella Varney Serrao. By spring 1889, the bust had been commissioned and Eddy sat in person for several sessions while the artist made a clay model. The completed bust was shipped to Eddy in the fall of 1890. Although Eddy had been satisfied with the original clay model, she was disappointed with some changes made in the final marble bust, and consequently it was never displayed.
