Mary Batchelder offered to make a portrait of Eddy in lieu of tuition payment for class at the Massachusetts Metaphysical College. Although it is not clear whether the painting was received as payment for class, an article in the February 1886 issue of The Christian Science Journal indicated that the painting hung in the reception room at the Massachusetts Metaphysical College. (See "Additional Gifts," The Christian Science Journal, February 1886.)
