Can you be so unconscious of the motives that govern every act of mine as to think your sister is justified in thinking that the Author of Science And HealthEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy is merciless or wishes to hide the light?

I who have made myself the slave of humanity, who give nine tenths of all my time to settle the difficulties that my headstrong students involve the Cause of ChristEditorial Note: The cause of Christian Science. in, either through their ignorance or their ambition!

I want educated and talented students such as your sister is to enter the field, but I want deep, earnest meek Christians, or else their talents do more harm than good. I have never found a student in 20 years' As Written: years experience who knew better than I did when they were ready to take my instructions but if I yielded to their persuasion and taught them– they would injure the CauseEditorial Note: The cause of Christian Science.. After reading my last letter to you if you still think hard of me for asking your sister to wait, or go to one of my students for instruction – then I will reconsider taking her and you will learn who knows best from sure experience when a person is ready to unite with me in Christ's work or to separate.
