Key To The Scriptures.

We have learned in Christian Science that when reading the Scriptures if you substitute the spiritual signification of a term for its material definition or the bare word, it will elucidate the meaning of the inspired writer. For this purpose we have appended to this work a brief synopsis of our Metaphysical version of scriptural terms, giving the spiritual sense of the word or its original meaning.

AdamMary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures579:15Adam. Error; a falsity; the belief in “original sin,”580:1finiteness, and mortality; “dust to dust;” red sand‐
stone; nothingness; the first god of mythology; not
580:3God’s man, who represents the one God and is His own
image and likeness; the opposite of Spirit and His crea‐
tions; that which is not the image and likeness of good,
580:6but a material belief, opposed to the one Mind, or Spirit;
a so-called finite mind, producing other minds, thus mak‐
 ing “gods many and lords many” (I Corinthians viii. 5);
580:9a product of nothing as the mimicry of something; an
unreality as opposed to the great reality of spiritual ex‐
istence and creation; a so-called man, whose origin,
580:12substance, and mind are found to be the antipode of
God, or Spirit; an inverted image of Spirit; the image
and likeness of what God has not created, namely, mat‐
580:15ter, sin, sickness, and death; the opposer of Truth,
termed error; Life’s counterfeit, which ultimates in
death; the opposite of Love, called hate; the usurper
580:18of Spirit’s creation, called self-creative matter; immor‐
tality’s opposite, mortality; that of which wisdom saith,
 “Thou shalt surely die.”
580:21The name Adam represents the false supposition that
Life is not eternal, but has beginning and end; that the
infinite enters the finite, that intelligence passes into non-
580:24intelligence, and that Soul dwells in material sense; that
immortal Mind results in matter, and matter in mortal
mind; that the one God and creator entered what He cre‐
580:27ated, and then disappeared in the atheism of matter.
. Error, a falsity, the belief of "original sin," sickness and death, Evil. The opposite of good, God, and His creation. A curse, a belief of intelligent matter, of finity, and mortality. "Dust to dust,"Gen 3:19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. red sandstoneEditorial Note: Mary Baker Eddy’s source for “red sandstone” here is not definitively known. However, there are three Bible concordances in Eddy’s personal library, giving information about the word “Adam,” that associate it with the color red. The Bible Student’s Concordance (Aaron Pick, London: Hamilton, Adams and Co., 1845, p. 361) provides a definition of Adam under the heading of “Man.”: “The Hebrew word Odom means “mankind, man (made) of earth. A derivation of that word, Odoum, means ‘red earth.’”  Eddy marked this page in the concordance. The definition of Adam in A Dictionary of the Bible (William Smith ed., Hartford:  S. S. Scranton and Co., 1867, p. 14) reads, “the name which is given in Scripture to the first man.  The term apparently has reference to the ground from which he was formed, which is called in Hebrew Adamah. The idea of redness of color seems to be inherent in either word.” In the concordance Improved Helps to Bible Study (J. A. Wilmore et. al., New York:  J. A. Wilmore and Co., 1895, p. 1067) the Hebrew definition of Adam reads “red or earth-born.”, nothingness. The first god of mythology. Not God's man, who represents the one God and is His own image and likeness, even the perfect and spiritual reflection of Spirit, whose life, substance, and intelligence are in and of God. The opposite of Spirit or its creations, that which is not the image and likeness of God but a belief of matter opposed to one Mind or Spirit. A so-called finite mind producing other minds, thus having "godsAs Written:gords many and lords many". I Cor.8:5I Cor 8:5 For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,) . A product of nothing, as the opposite of something; an unreality, as opposed to the great reality of spiritual existence and creation. A so-called man whose origin, substance, and mind are supposed to be in and of the opposite of God, Spirit, an inverted image of Spirit or the image and likeness of God's opposites; namely, matter, sin, sickness, and death.

The antipodes of Truth, termed error; the counterfeit of Life, which ultimates in death; the opposite of Love, called hate; the antipodes of Spirit’s As Written: Spirits creation, called self-creative matter; immortality's opposite, mortality. That of which Wisdom saith, "Thou shalt surely die"Gen 2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. A false supposition that life and its unbroken sphere is not eternal, but has a beginning As Written: begining and ending; that the Infinite entered the finite, intelligence passed into nonintelligence, soul As Written: soal terminated in material sense; that mind results in matter and matter in mind. That the one God and Creator entered what He created, and then disappeared in the atheism of matter.

ArkMary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures581:8Ark. Safety; the idea, or reflection, of Truth, proved
581:9to be as immortal as its Principle; the understanding of
 Spirit, destroying belief in matter.
God and man coexistent and eternal; Science show‐
581:12ing that the spiritual realities of all things are created
by Him and exist forever. The ark indicates temptation
 overcome and followed by exaltation.
. Safety, the idea of Truth proven as immortal as its Principle. The understanding of Spirit destroying the belief of matter. God and man co-existent and eternal. Science showing that the spiritual identities of all things are created by God and exist forever. The illustration that temptation overcome is followed by exaltation.

AngelsMary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures581:4Angels. God’s thoughts passing to man; spiritual
intuitions, pure and perfect; the inspiration of goodness,
581:6purity, and immortality, counteracting all evil, sensuality,
 and mortality.

AbrahamMary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures579:10Abraham. Fidelity; faith in the divine Life and in the
 eternal Principle of being.
579:12This patriarch illustrated the purpose of Love to create
trust in good, and showed the life-preserving power of
 spiritual understanding.

579:9the creator the early fruits of experience.
. Watchfulness self-offering, surrendering to his Maker the early fruits of experience.Gen 4:1 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord. Gen 4:2 And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. Gen 4:3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord. Gen 4:4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering:

pensation; the ills of the flesh rebuked.
. (Jacob's son) Hope and faith, spiritual compensation. The ills of the flesh rebuked.

AtonementAs Written:Atonment. The teachings, demonstrations, and sufferings of the man Jesus when showing mortals the way of salvation from sin, sickness, and death. Divine Science. Soul's triumph over material sense. The supremacy of Spirit asserted, man reassuming the image and likeness of God in his scientific at-one-ment with Him. Jesus of Nazareth gave the all-important proof that when God is understood it will be seen Soul creates its own body and cannot for the smallest instant be without a body This divine science overcame death and the grave and was Jesus' final demonstration that the body is the same after as before death hence there is a state of probation and progress whereby to gain out of a material and into the spiritual sense of existence beyond the grave. The meek as mighty Nazarene exhibited a material body after the crucifixion As Written: crucifiesx to show his followers the great need there is of spiritualizing thought and action to make man God-like before what is termed death, that after it he may be fit for the higher school of the just made perfect. Not death but the understanding of life, spiritualizes mortal mind and this mind determines the state of the body. Mortality disappearing and immortality coming to light. Self-abnegation and Love blessing its enemies. Not blood flowing from the veins of Jesus, but His out-flowing sense of life, truth, and love, so much higher, purer, and more God-like than mankind's, shed its hallowed influence on the whole human race and marked out the only way to heaven. Not the death of the cross, but the cross-bearing, deathless life that Jesus left for the example of mankind ransoms from sin all who follow it.

illusion; a false belief; error masquerading as the pos‐
sessor of life, strength, animation, and power to act.
582:9Renewal of affections; self-offering; an improved
state of mortal mind; the introduction of a more spiritual
origin; a gleam of the infinite idea of the infinite Prin‐
582:12ciple; a spiritual type; that which comforts, consoles,
 and supports.

BabelMary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures581:17Babel. Self-destroying error; a kingdom divided
581:18against itself, which cannot stand; material knowledge.
The higher false knowledge builds on the basis of evi‐
dence obtained from the five corporeal senses, the more
581:21confusion ensues, and the more certain is the downfall
 of its structure.
. Error self-destroying, "a kingdom divided against itself that cannot standMatt 12:22 ¶Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. Matt 12:23 And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David? Matt 12:24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils. Matt 12:25 And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand: Matt 12:26 And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand? Matt 12:27 And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges. Matt 12:28 But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you. Mark 3:22 ¶And the scribes which came down from Jerusalem said, He hath
Beelzebub, and by the prince of the devils casteth he out devils.
Mark 3:23 And he called them unto him, and said unto them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan? Mark 3:24 And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. Mark 3:25 And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand. Mark 3:26 And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.

ever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle.

583:15its utility and is found elevating the race, rousing the
dormant understanding from material beliefs to the ap‐
prehension of spiritual ideas and the demonstration of
583:18divine Science, thereby casting out devils, or error, and
 healing the sick.
. The superstructure of Truth and Love. Whatever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle. That which affords proof of its utility is found elevating the race, healing the sick, rousing the dormant understanding from material beliefs to the apprehension of spiritual ideas and the demonstration of divine scienceEditorial Note: Christian Science, casting out devils, error, and healing the sickMatt 10:1 And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.  in the illumination of spiritual understanding, and Mind
584:6measures time according to the good that is unfolded.
This unfolding is God’s day, and “there shall be no night
 there.”
. The irradiance of Life the spiritual idea of Truth and Love creating. "And the evening and the morning were the first day" Gen.1. 5Gen 1:5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day. . The objects of time and sense illumined by spiritual understanding disappearing and == Mind measuring time as longer or shorter according to the good it unfolds, which is God's day, and "no night is there"Rev 22:5 And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever. .

DevilMary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures584:17Devil. Evil; a lie; error; neither corporeality nor
584:18mind; the opposite of Truth; a belief in sin, sickness,
and death; animal magnetism or hypnotism; the lust of
the flesh, which saith: “I am life and intelligence in
584:21matter. There is more than one mind, for I am mind, —
a wicked mind, self-made or created by a tribal god and
put into the opposite of mind, termed matter, thence to
584:24reproduce a mortal universe, including man, not after the
image and likeness of Spirit, but after its own image.”
. A Lie, error, neither a person nor a Principle and the opposite of Truth. A personal belief of evil, sin, sickness, and death; animal magnetism, mesmerism, the lust of the flesh which saith, _ "I am life and intelligence in matter; there is more than one Mind, for I am mind and a wicked mind self-made, but created out of God's materials, and put into the opposite of mind, termed matter, thence to reproduce a mortal universe and mortal men, not after the image and likeness of Spirit, but after my own image; multiplying in Darwinian process, and replenishing the earth with venemous reptiles, devouring beasts, and rising from a monkey up to sinning, sick, and dying man. More subtle than any beast of the fieldGen 3:1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? , I enter into this Deceit as normal, that non-intelligence named matter matures manfrom an egg up to what I term intelligence; mind, which so-called mind claims evil more real, and as eternal, as good. Also that the opposite of God originates in God, else evil and matter have self-creative powers co-equal and co-eternal with Deity. I as a lie have the subtlety to say and to make it appear that evil is more successful than good and a lie is the truth, else that Truth is the father of the lie. I declare that the Lord knows all about sin, and having sin in Mind He must evolve it as the necessary reflection of His own Mind, hence I decide that a mortal sinner is God's child, - His own "image and likenessGen 1:26 ¶And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. Gen 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. .

My first appearance, as a snake coiled about the tree of knowledgeGen 2:8 ¶And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. Gen 2:9 And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. , was to give my signet to error, that I name matter, having life and mind besides material senses whence all human knowledge shall proceed and through which it shall be received. This so-called sense of matter is worse than nonsense, but my progeny having a material basis will accept it as truth and take for granted all this denouement of error and subtlety brings out. Do not ask who made me,? But infer the soft impeachment that God made me. My mythical origin as material sense and mortal mind I shall dignify as the appearing of man's personality, and when this error begins to die out I can hold on for a time to another error, namely that God is a person if I am not, I am aware that a lie would not be a lie unless it claimed to be Truth, hence [?] Unclear or illegible  [?] Unclear or illegible  [?] Unclear or illegible  The necessity of my claim to resemble Truth, else to make Truth look like me, a lie, in either case I can succeed as error. My origin was darkness, the myth of matter I went up a mist from the earth. Gen. ii .6.Gen 2:6 But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground. and I declared that the Lord made me out of the dust of the groundAs Written: gound , a manGen 2:7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. . I know the Truth is there is no matter in Spirit from which to create matter, and no evil in good from which to create evil; but having denied the substance of Truth, Spirit, I name their opposites error, and matter substance, and sentient with Soul, then put this life-giving Infinite inside of a life-destroying finite. My main point is not to be found out in this mis-creation, and have my man return to dustGen 3:19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. as Truth declares he shall. So I shall call Soul a sinner, and by a miraculous metamorphose convert it into a good soul just before being driven out of matter because of sin and imbecility straight into the power and perfection of Spirit. Gen 2:7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

“Because of the error or lie that I have engrafted into the premises of mortal man, it must follow in the conclusion, and this man be accursed of Wisdom; so I will recover my ground on another proposition as false as my first, when saying, "for God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof you’re eyes shall be opened and ye shall be as gods knowing good and evil. Gen. ,iii 5.Gen 3:5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. My second lie is the error I shall charge upon Truth, namely that God Spirit made man material, but upright, then man made himself up wrongEccl 7:29 Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions. , but the unerring Principle of creation pardons mistakes instead of destroying them, and accepts the original error

Error; a falsity; the belief in “original sin,”580:1finiteness, and mortality; “dust to dust;” red sand‐
stone; nothingness; the first god of mythology; not
580:3God’s man, who represents the one God and is His own
image and likeness; the opposite of Spirit and His crea‐
tions; that which is not the image and likeness of good,
580:6but a material belief, opposed to the one Mind, or Spirit;
a so-called finite mind, producing other minds, thus mak‐
 ing “gods many and lords many” (I Corinthians viii. 5);
A personal belief of evil, sin, sickness, and death; animal magnetism, mesmerism, the lust of the flesh which saith, _ "I am life and intelligence in matter; there is more than one Mind, for I am mind and a wicked mind self-made, but created out of God's materials, and put into the opposite of mind, termed matter, thence to reproduce a mortal universe and mortal men, not after the image and likeness of Spirit, but after my own image; Mmultiplying in Darwinian process, and replenishing the earth with venemous reptiles, devouring beasts, and rising from a monkey up to sinning, sick, and dying man. More subtle than any beast of the fieldGen 3:1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? , I enter into this Decieeit as normal, that non-intelligence named matter matures manfrom an egg into up to what I term intelligence; mind, which so-called mind claims evil more real, and as eternal, as good. Also that the opposite of God originates in God, else that evil and matter have self-creative powers co-equal and co-eternal with Deity. Gen 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. .

My first appeareance, as a snake coiled about the tree of knowledgeGen 2:8 ¶And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. Gen 2:9 And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. , was to give my signet to error, that I name matter, having life and mind besides material senses whence all human knowledge shall proceed and through which it shall be recieeived. This so-called sense of matter is more worse than nonsense, but my progeny having a material basis will accept it as truth and take for granted all this denouement of error and subtlety brings out. Do not ask who made me,? But infer the soft impeachment that God made me. My mythical origin will not be understood as material sense and mortal mind and I shall dignify myself as the appearing of man's a personality, and when this error begins to die out I can hold on for a time to another error, namely that God is a person if I am not, I am fully aware that a lie would not be a lie unless it claimed to be Truth, hence my [?] Unclear or illegible  [?] Unclear or illegible  [?] Unclear or illegible  The necessity hence m of my claim to resemble Truth, or else to make Truth look like me, a lie, in either case I can succeed as error. My origin was darkness, the myth of matt matter I went up a mist from the earth. Gen. 2. ii .6.Gen 2:6 But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground. and I declared that the Lord made me out of the dust of the gound Corrected: ground, a manGen 2:7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. . I know the Truth is there is no matter in Spirit out of from which to create matter, and no evil in good from which to create evil; but having denied the substance of sp Truth, Spirit, I name their opposites error, and matter substance, and sentient with Soul, then put this life-giving Infinite inside of a life-destroying finite. So I shall call Soul a sinner, and by a miraculous metamorphose turn convert it into a good soul just before being saint after it he is driven out of matter because of sin and imbecility straight into the power and perfection of alias Spirit. It have said that breathing into the body Life made it become a living Soul but I can prove that the body dies with the Soul inside of it.Gen 2:7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

“Because of the error or lie that I have engrafted into in the premises of mortal man, it must follows in the conclusion, and this man be accursed of Wisdom; so I will recover my ground on another as false proposition as false as my first, when saying, "for God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof you’re eyes shall be opened and ye shall be as gods knowing good and evil. Gen. 3,iii 5.Gen 3:5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

Mary Baker Eddy’s source for “red sandstone” here is not definitively known. 1067) the Hebrew definition of Adam reads “red or earth-born.” Christian Science Christian Science Christian Science
