Your very welcome letter of the 30th ultEditorial Note: This letter is not extant. is at hand & whilst it is such a pleasure to hear from you, it nevertheless gives me the conviction As Written: convicton that you did not receive my last to you which was written on the 14th of AprilEditorial Note: See 973.96.012., at which time I sent my last Order for Books with a fifty-dollarEditorial Note: $50.00 in 1888 is the equivalent of $1603.70 in 2023. Express Money OrderAs Written:M. O for the same. The Books all came except the 2 dozenAs Written:doz of your historical Sketch, which did not come at all. That letter of course I was desirous for you to have, or I should not have written it to you. I am satisfied that you do not receive nearly all the letters I write you, & then you wonder you do not hear from me. I do not ever write, unless it is something that I think best to say to you, & when I do, I like to feel that you receive them, or I do not feel like writing at all. I don't As Written: dont like to have to send letters through someoneAs Written:some one else, to be sure that you receive them. I know how fully occupied you must be, & therefore do not wish to trespass upon your time, only as I think it something I am desirous for you to know, & think you would like to know. As to myself, I am still going on steadily with my work, & doing all I can possibly in our blessed CauseEditorial Note: The cause of Christian Science. But of course I have a great deal to contend with. Mr H. C. Waddell, has been here for the past month, working in his line, day & night, & now, he has gone over to San FranciscoEditorial Note: San Francisco, California for another Month. et ceteraAs Written:&c. Of course he has won both his friends & enemies. He did not call on me at all, but I met him twice at our Church Service & he promised to call, but has not. Poor man– he is still in the depths. I wish he might come out, as he might do much good. A gentleman who was in last evening, compared him to Paul, before his conversion.
Now as to the work in ChicagoEditorial Note: Chicago, Illinois many things there, seem very strange to me. I am so sorry for them. I want to give you my impression on one thing, & see if yours corresponds As Written: corcesponds with mine. It is this. I am fully convinced that some parties there, have learned where Mr Adam's vulnerable point is, & on that they are thoroughly holding him. That is, on the Money question. If they can succeed in holding him on this, until they bring him into a financial disgrace, then they will have gained their point. I don't As Written: dont know whether you have his Journal or not, but if you do you will see by this Month's As Written: Months NumberAs Written:No– the last "Departure." Now you see where that places me. He expects to come home in July, again. Now what Mr Waddell or any of the others may do, I do not mind at all. I can stand all that, but when it comes to my own husband, coming here & taking such a stand directly opposite to me, & to his previous teaching, what is the result to be? The Struggle to get out of the conditions of last year, I thought was hard enough, but come to repeat it again this year, I don't As Written: dont feel equal to it. My Dear Sister, can you give me a thought occasionally, to help me through this dark place, & for me to do my duty faithfully? Oh! for the Light, & strength to do right. I feel that he is, on that point, thoroughlyAs Written:thouroughly mesmerized & does not dream of it. CannotAs Written:Can not this Seeming power over him be broken? It does seem to me it ought to be for the sake of the Cause. No one can realize my position in this matter.
The only thing that I feel that the BostonEditorial Note: Boston, Massachusetts people have done that was not quite wise, was publishing in the Journal that "Chicago Vote"Editorial Note: See “Chicago Vote” on page 49 of the April 1888 issue of The Christian Science Journal. This was a request from the pastor and directors of the Church of Christ (Scientist) of Chicago that the card listing Joseph A. Adams as a practitioner and teacher of Christian Science be removed from the Journal due to his affiliating with metaphysical “schools” not loyal to Christian Science. which of course is supposed to be some of Mrs Linscotts indiscretions. I have here all of those things to contend with here. I am hoping for much good to result from your visit to Chicago at the meetingEditorial Note: Mary Baker Eddy gave a speech at the Central Music Hall in Chicago on June 13, 1888.. I shall be so glad to hear a word from you always.
