I have just finished reading and re-reading, with much interest and care, the 2nd volumeAs Written:vol. of "Science and Heath"Editorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy which fell into my hands through the kindness of a friend. I find myself much interested, desiring to grasp all of good there is in the systemEditorial Note: Christian Science; and yet much perplexed with what seem, at present, insurmountable difficulties in the way of acceptance of the whole of your teachings. With many of your statements I heartily agree, but cannot see the truth of others, even though declared self- evident by you. In some cases I fully agree with your premise but your conclusion entirely baffles me; I cannot see that it follows. For instance, I fully agree that Spirit, Mind, is the only creative power, but I cannot see how it follows that Spirit cannot create matter. Cannot the greater produce the less? Again, you claim that there can be but one Mind. Why cannot the one Infinite Mind create other minds? Can aught save mind think? And who or what is it that is thinking the erroneous thoughts of which you speak?
Who is the "We", in the opening paragraph of the 2nd Vol.Editorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, who "are pecking our shells" et cetereaAs Written:&c and of whom you say (at the top of page 2) that "when we become Spirit we shall have but one Mind."? What are we now, and how shall we become Spirit?
If all is Spirit and there is no matter how can we be aught but Spirit now? And is it not Contrary to your views that anything not Spirit can be made with Spirit?
I ask these questions, not for controversy, or debate, but for light?
May I also ask you if the healing benefits of your systemEditorial Note: Christian Science can be received by one who believes in the readiness and ability of God to help him - or if you prefer it - who accepts the view that sickness is but a "belief" a "dream", - even though he is unable to accept your views of creation and your philosophy and theology in general? And must one accept all your teachings and interpretations of scripture in order to become the agent of the healing power to others? i.e. is it necessary that he be a believer in anything more than the efficacy of the healing element? I fear I am asking you too much; but I am greatly interested in this subject in its practical bearings - in any helpful influence it has on humanity’s welfare; and, wishing to know whether one in my state may hope by "seeking to find" I know of no more probable source of a correct judgment As Written: judgement than yourself -
I do not know as you will have time or inclination to aid me but I have ventured to explain, to the foregoing extent, my position and ask you whether you think such an one as I can be enabled to receive and impart the benefits of this systemEditorial Note: Christian Science? I have already I fear trespassed too much upon you, but have very far from said all that I would be glad to express. Would it be possible for me to hear from you or have a conversation with you?
