Pittsburgh, Pa.
Recently in talking to my teacher, Miss Nemi Robertson, C.S.D., in Orange, New Jersey, she questioned me regarding the progress my children were making in Christian Science. When I told her of the remarks they had made she said, "I think it would please Mrs. Eddy to hear that."
My children had been studying the lesson "Adam and Fallen Man" and I asked them "Do you believe the Bible?" "Why, of course." "Is everything in it true?" "Of course." "Is that true you have just been reading about Adam and Eve and the treeGen 3:1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? Gen 3:2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: Gen 3:3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. Gen 3:4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: Gen 3:5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. Gen 3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. Gen 3:7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. Gen 3:8 And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden. Gen 3:9 And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? Gen 3:10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. Gen 3:11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? Gen 3:12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. Gen 3:13 And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. ?" "No." "Then how can the Bible be true? You say everything in it is true and yet you tell me that isn't. How can you explain it?"
They thought hard for a whileAs Written:awhile and then one of them (five years old) gave this explanation: "The Bible is true and so is the Adam and Eve part. Adam thought he was mortal man and he got bad. That part shows what will happen to you if you think you are mortal man. You won't get anything but bad like Adam did if you think you are mortal man. But the image and likenessGen 1:26 ¶And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. Gen 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. part shows you what you will get if you remember you are image and likeness and the Bible has them both so you will see the difference." One day when we were studying the first commandmentEx 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. at home I asked them "What does it mean to have a God?" "It means that Life, Truth and Love belong to you, that Life, Truth and Love is always with you, always taking care of you." Studying the lesson in which occurred the account of the feeding of the five thousand and the walking on the waterMatt 14:13 ¶When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities. Matt 14:14 And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick. Matt 14:15 ¶And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals. Matt 14:16 But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat. Matt 14:17 And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes. Matt 14:18 He said, Bring them hither to me. Matt 14:19 And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. Matt 14:20 And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full. Matt 14:21 And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children. Matt 14:22 ¶And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. Matt 14:23 And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. Matt 14:24 But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. Matt 14:25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. Matt 14:26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. Matt 14:27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. Matt 14:28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. Matt 14:29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. Matt 14:30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. Matt 14:31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? Matt 14:32 And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. Matt 14:33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God. I asked for their explanation- After careful consideration this was the answer of one, then four years old,- "Jesus knew God couldn't be down in the water and be all covered up and so he knew God's reflection couldn't and he knew Truth had made the people all full up and then they knew it, too-"
I began reading the weekly lesson to the children when the oldestEditorial Note: Florence Boyd Lindsey and Walter H. Boyd, Jr. (twins) were two years old – they are now nearly eight – and as soon as they could I let them find the places – when they had learned to read let them do their own reading. They can now find any citation in the Bible or Science and HealthEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. They have also learned to make their own demonstrations (even when two or three years old) and to refer all kinds of problems to Principle and they frequently solve their own problems unaided and voice the Truth to others.
What I have said of my childrenEditorial Note: In addition to the three children specifically mentioned in her letter, Florence Clerihew Boyd also had two other children: George C. Boyd (1908-1955) and James W. Boyd (1911-1995). is true of other Christian Science children with whom I have come in contact- I know it will rejoice you to hear that the lesson study by the children is usual when either father or As Written: of mother is enough a Christian Scientist to study for himself- I have a class in the Sabbath School of children nine and ten years old and I have given them opportunity to tell in the class what demonstrations they have individually made in the week, demonstrative of the lesson, feeling that they should realize that demonstration is one of the great differences between a Christian Science Sunday School and any other. I have been impressed with the fact that when in seeming distress it is the first impulse of the children to run to Science and Health and the Bible- Frequently in telling how they made a demonstration they will say "I ran and got Science and Health or the Bible and read awhile and that helped me to remember the Truth and then the pain was all gone." To me this is beautiful-
We have been studying the ten commandmentsEx 20:1 And God spake all these words, saying, Ex 20:2 I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Ex 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Ex 20:4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Ex 20:5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; Ex 20:6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. Ex 20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. Ex 20:8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Ex 20:9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: Ex 20:10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: Ex 20:11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. Ex 20:12 ¶Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. Ex 20:13 Thou shalt not kill. Ex 20:14 Thou shalt not commit adultery. Ex 20:15 Thou shalt not steal. Ex 20:16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. Ex 20:17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s. and the day we studied the fifth oneEx 20:12 ¶Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. little girl told her mother she would gladly have stayed five hours longer- We had found that "the land" was not a house and lot in Pittsburgh but the secret place of the Most HighPs 91:1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. and several times after this little girl told her mother the remembrance of the secret place helped her- This same little one told of a demonstration made for her five-year-oldAs Written:five year old brother- He asked her to treat him and she said "I started to ask him what was the matter and then I remembered what I ought to know was that there wasn't anything the matter and in a few minutes we were out playing" Another child asked "What do people mean when they say what is the matter? do they mean what claim of matter have you been believing in?" It is a temptation to write you many more beautiful thoughts given me by the children- I do thank you for the privilege of being a teacher in a Christian Science Sabbath School and for the wonderful help which Christian Science is to me with my children; I have long wished to thank you from the mother's point of view and I would like to write much more- I know the best "thank you" I can give you is to live as you have taught me and this I am trying to do-
