For years I have been willing to be led of the SpiritRom 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. Gal 5:18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. , Now it inclines me to write to you. I might refer to many developments of late but time will not permit. There are many complications in our work. Many who have tried to figure in & to make themselves busy. I am sure that I comprehend your attitude & situation even unto the minute interests.
I started my journalEditorial Note: The Mind Cure and Science of Life with no feelings against you or anyone. The field is large & is ready to harvest but the laborers are few.Matt 9:36 ¶But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. Matt 9:37 Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Matt 9:38 Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest. Luke 10:1 After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come. Luke 10:2 Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest. Of course you were so early in the light it seems to you that all who receive instructions should get them direct, but your works and others have cultivated the public mind to make it so ready for Truth that they call for it now on every hand.
I know much of the work both east and west as busy interested ones flood me with papers letters etc. on the subject. I ignore much of it & go on at my work as God gives me to see it.
My recent letter to Sister Hopkins may have shown you a little of the early history at Chicago last May. I have felt sure from the time that I started teaching & publishing in the mental-cure interests that you in your comprehension have known that it develops a more general interest & that it cannot in any way hurt the sale of your works but must increase them & will & does cause a greater awakening in all your work.
The varying or differing in something are inevitable of course & really in the order of development in the grand outlook & I think you so regard it.
I have not & cannot afford to have any blames in my heart toward you or anyone, & yet I came near being drawn into some personalities.
To be frank I feel that you did not do right in the matter of my articleEditorial Note: See “Letter from Chicago” on page 6 of the September 1884 issue of the Journal of Christian Science. in your Journal last Sept. Also as wife & I are certain that we began with your 5th lesson & took all the balanceAs Written:bal. & as Dr. Fry thus understood it & told us both that "only four had been taught & that we would be at the fifth," we felt that it was not right to publish or claim that I received "less than a half course." Again I felt that it was too much to publish that I "quote from the pages of Science & HealthEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy," while I am certain that no one can show that I have quoted one line from the beginning of my journal from it not a half line. If I have & you will cite it to me I will make full As Written: ful apology to you & in my JournalEditorial Note: The Mind Cure and Science of Life. If you mean that I impart your teachings or ideas, I must say, that only compliments your power to impart Truth or mine to assimilate. You judged me in your class because I failed once to state being as your held it. I duly appreciated the courtesy you extended to wife & self. & I did not overstep the rules of society that require us sometimes to listen, instead of being conspicuous.
Well let it all go. You are doing a grand work & I know it & am no enemy. At Lacon IllinoisAs Written:Ill I had good class of Church folks mostly & it will be the same here I presume. I am perfectly at home with the subject in public. I charged part of the students #50.Editorial Note: $50.00 in 1885 is the equivalent of $1,326.53 in 2019. at Lacon & got it with their cheerfulness. The question of text booksAs Written:text books naturally comes up & of course I cannot recommend any aside from Dr. Evans & yoursEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. The Lacon class I supplied with his. There will be a good demand here, I had an agent, a healer here for 4 weeks in advance of me & she has cured some very difficult cases so that the Doctors are aroused. I will lecture this P M & twice again. Monday, Tues. in Opera st. nights & there open a good class I think.
Of course you feel the attitude I have held towards the magnetic healers, I can see all you feel, but results in the outcome must rule & it takes time to judge. I am between the two fires or independent, yet lean to the Mind-cure science every hour & surely all know that I am solid for it. My charity is not a policy, but it is for Good. Truth cannot suffer. I expect my May EditorialAs Written:Edit. will stir the Spiritualists more against me & some will depart me. I shall not retract. I feel the kind heart of sister Hopkins.
The object of this letter is to show that there is no feeling with me. Hope to hear from you.
