My dear Mrs. Eddy:

I receivedAs Written:rec.d a cardEditorial Note: This card is not extant. yesterday from Mrs Hopkins, in which she says you would like to hear from me. I haven’t written, because I thoughtAs Written:tho’t you had no time for correspondence; but I am very glad to have an opportunity to tell you of my work. The most of my cases have been chronic, of many years standing. I haven’t healed any, but they have been wonderfully helped. One lady hadn’t been out of her room for a year, & was waiting, & fearing death wouldAs Written:wd come at any moment; she can'tAs Written:cant read, as she has a belief of cataracts, & sat in her chair helpless, with a belief of paralysis, & lived on crackers & water, Was taking medicine four times a day, electricity &c. I have been treating her two weeks. She eats anythingAs Written:any thing now; fruit cake for supper, fried oysters, pickles any & everythingAs Written:every thing & nothing hurts her; she sleeps like a child, and goes down to her meals, & dusts her rooms, & can now see to read, & goes out to ride, & is bright & cheerful. She has always taken a nap twice a day & now doesn’t even lie down in the daytime feeling no need of it. Then I have patients with the belief of Myopia & Astigmatism of thirty years standing. I can’t see that I have helped them, I have one patient that I feel particularly desirous to heal. He is one of the most cultivated and influential men in the country. He is a clergymanAs Written:clergy man, and is widely known, North, South, East, & West. He is very fair minded, and condemns nothing without investigating it. He lives in Los Angeles, CaliforniaAs Written:Cal. and is only here for two weeks. I told him about Metaphysics, and he became interested, and said he wouldAs Written:wd like to read a book on the subject if there had been any written. I loaned him my booksEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy., and he said he wouldAs Written:wd like to test it. He is suffering from a belief of an inflamed eye. He went to Dr. Williams, the famous oculist of Boston, & has put aside his remedy to try this. If I heal him, he will accept this, and he will be worth an army of ordinary men, to the causeEditorial Note: The cause of Christian Science., as he has so much influence. I have been treating him about a week, and regret to say I cannot see that he improves. He is very anxious to give it a thorough trial As Written: trail & follows implicitly my directions. What do you suppose is the trouble? His friends & physicians are all advising him to go to an oculist, but he is holding off to try this. If you couldAs Written:cd make any suggestions I shouldAs Written:shd be very grateful. I argue in this manner, “There is no intelligence in matter & therefore your eye has not informed you that it is inflamed. Matter cannot be inflamed, & there is no sensation in matter therefore it cannot pain you. It is a belief of mortal mind which says to you that your eye is inflamed & pains you. It is false. God made you in his image, & you are spiritual & not material. God governs you His government is harmonious & this is discord & a lie; it has not power to stand before Truth, God, you have nothing to fear. God controls you & there is no power in error to harm you”. I think of error, in arguing against it, as a lie that shrinks away when confronted with Truth. Is there anythingAs Written:any thing wrong in my method? As I say, I have helped all of my cases in some respect, for most of them have a variety of diseases. I think I shall treat this gentleman hereafter twice a day, as he will only be here two weeks longer & I do want to heal & to make a convert of him. He wouldAs Written:wd make a wonderful healer he has such a splendidly disciplined mind, & such remarkable power over men. My treatments are not generally over five minutes. I have then formed a perfect picture of them spiritually & complete my argument in that time. Is that long enough, or wouldAs Written:wd you advise repetition? I have been asked to take a gentleman who is an infidel. I said not at present. Do you think I couldAs Written:cd affect him. Of course I know that God does it, but whether God wouldAs Written:wd heal a man who denies his existence, I don’t know. WouldAs Written:Wd you advise me to try? I have another patient that I am going to Monday. She is a child of 14 or 15 & a blind fell on her back, a year ago & she has a belief of being paralyzed below the waist. Her health seems to be perfectly good every way, but she cannot move her limbs. She wears a plaster jacket as her spine was trying to curve. Is it necessary when I begin to treat her, that she take off that jacket? Of course I shouldn'tAs Written:shdnt depend on it, more than I shouldAs Written:shd on her dress, for assistance but I don’t believe they wd be willing to take it off at present, as they say that is the only way she can be comfortable at all. I shall wait until I hear from you, before giving them my directions about it. Please remember me Kindly to all the household, and I hope to hear from you soon –

Lovingly yours
S. E Gray.
