Although I had a pleasant call from you, I must say, after listening to your talks, and having read your "Spiritual Healing Formula," I have come to this conclusion, that your principle is not the one that Jesus taught, and whom Paul and others followed in the footsteps of, neither is it the principle that Mrs Eddy teaches, which I am sorry to say, for she voices the teachings of Jesus.
I have no doubt but what you are sincere in your belief, nevertheless that does not make it correct; the Mohammedan, who expects his soul will be saved by a visit to Mecca, is sincere, but you know, as well as I that it has nothing to do with the saving of his soul;– the professing Christian thinks, that by believing in the Atonement of Jesus he will be saved, but a better understanding teaches us; that, that is only a belief.
Jesus was the greatest As Written: greatist teacher and demonstrator that ever was known, and why should we not listen to his teachings, instead As Written: insted of listening to the carnal mind, (so-calledAs Written:so called) that says I (carnal mind) and matter is something, and when Truth begins to creep in and say it is an illusion, it tells another lie by saying it is God’s thoughts. Why say it is an illusion in one breath and in the next say it is God’s thoughts; why not come out as did Jesus and say God is Spirit, and hold to it, and then say as he did, "that Spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me haveLuke 24:39 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. :— The flesh profiteth nothingJohn 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. ." With that understanding, you can say, as did Jesus to those who believed that carnal mind and matter came from Spirit; "Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it, And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not. Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me? He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God."John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. John 8:45 And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not. John 8:46 Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me? John 8:47 He that is of God heareth God’s words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.
Paul knowing the nothingness of the carnal mind and flesh, says; No good thing dweleth in the fleshRom 7:18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. :— The flesh lusteth against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh, and they are contrary one to the otherGal 5:17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. :— The carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can beRom 8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. ."
The above teaches us that Spirit is real and matter unreal; one is Truth and the other is a lie.
If Spirit is substance and all in all; matter the opposite must be nothing. You cannot say that it came from something and then say it is an illusion (not real). If a lie came from truth then it is truth, and never was and never will be an illusion, but as it is the opposite it must be nothing, for one is real, hence the other must be unreal. When you know the truth, the lie goes, (notwithstanding it had seemed real) to nothing from whence it came.
You say that Spirit, is all and in all, and there is nothing beside it, and to illustrate it, you use the sponge in water; Admitting that the sponge is saturated with water the sponge is there and is foreign to water, therefore is not changed. You say that matter occupies no space for Spirit is all- Let us leave the above illustration, for both are matter and take one that has something to do with matter and Spirit; Let us take for our illustration a person now living, your theory might hold somewhatAs Written:some what good in that case, but to have a principle we want it to carry us through; If the body is God’s thought and God is in the body as well as out where is God when this body passes through what is called death? According to your theory, God Spirit must be dead in the body and the body occupies a space that Spirit does not.
Again your theory is like the following; Cold air freezes the water and forms ice, hence they are one, all in all. Can you tell me how you are going to dissolve it to its former state without the opposite, heat? You cannot dissolve the thought of flesh, matter by calling it an illusion for you have made it real by saying it is God's thought. I can find no better way, to overcomeAs Written:over come the flesh, thanAs Written:then Jesus's As Written: Jesus' teachings.
I find by his teachings, that Spirit is All, the only substance and intelligenceAs Written:inteligence. With that understanding, I can say, "The flesh profeteth nothingJohn 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. .
I admit it is something to the carnal mind; but I have found out, that, that is a liar and the father of liesJohn 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. , and that it is at enmity with God, and is not subject to the law of GodRom 8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. .
I liken your theory to the rich man, who asked Jesus the way to inherit eternal life. Jesus said unto him, "Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor As Written: Honour thy father and thy mother. And he said, all these have I kept from my youth up." Jesus knowing that, that was not all, said unto him (and to all, who believe matter is God's As Written: Gods thoughts), Yet lackest thou one thing; sell all [your belief in matter] that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor [not sell it by saying it is a belief, illusion, unreal, and retain it by saying it is God’s thought; but say it is a belief, a lie, for all is Spirit] and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come follow me [my teachings, that all is Spirit].Matt 19:16 ¶And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? Matt 19:17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. Matt 19:18 He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Matt 19:19 Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Matt 19:20 The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet? Matt 19:21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. Mark 10:17 ¶And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? Mark 10:18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. Mark 10:19 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. Mark 10:20 And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth. Mark 10:21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. Luke 18:18 And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? Luke 18:19 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God. Luke 18:20 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother. Luke 18:21 And he said, All these have I kept from my youth up. Luke 18:22 Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.
I was surprised on reading the item in the Providence Journal of last Sunday, to find the faculty (those, who were interviewed) of the R. I. Metaphysical College, ignorant of the two systems As Written: sistems now in practice– it grieves me, when I think of so many who are professing to understand Christian Science and know nothing about it. It is sad to think of; they are the blind leading the blind and will fall into the ditchLuke 6:39 And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch? — I can now see, why tears flowed down Mrs Eddy's cheeks when she spoke, in the Primary class, of those who had fallen from the Truth.
Knowing how to use, carnal mind, is no proof of an understanding As Written: understanging of Christian Science.
I write these few lines with no ill feelingAs Written:fealing, but with Love, I have wrote this from my own conscience, I have not consulted anyoneAs Written:any one neither have I heard a word from Mrs Eddy, since you were here– I do not hold to the personality of Mrs Eddy, for the Truth, for "the flesh profeteth nothing,"John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. but I must say, she is dear to me as a teacher for she has shown me the way to understand the Truth that Jesus taught.
