In these days of persecutionEditorial Note: This is most likely a reference to the “Next Friends” lawsuit that took place in 1907, which was rightly regarded by Mary Baker Eddy and Christian Scientists as persecution of her. I am reminded of the "wilderness" period which followed the class instruction at the Mass. Metaphysical College in LynnEditorial Note: Lowell, Massachusetts, more than twenty-five years ago.

I remember how vehemently, even sternly, you rebuked the error which seemed at the time to be greater than my understanding of Truth, but I never shall forget the loving kindness with which you told me the next morning that I was not only 'called" but "chosen"Matt 22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen. . That assurance from you, and another in a letter a few years later, have stood by me in many dark hours, enabling me to verify God's promise to His Church, given in Isaiah 43–2, "When thou passest through the waters I will be with thee; and through the rivers they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee-"Isa 43:2 When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.

Could those whom you rebuke see and feel the love back of the seeming severity, they would not murmur at Love's (chastening.Heb 12:5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:

You will be glad to know that we are seeing more proofs of spiritual awakening in Newburyport than ever before, and we have no words adequate to express our love and gratitude to you, for what you have done for the world, by the priceless gift of Science and HealthEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. We know that the arms of our loving Father-Mother, God, are around and about you, and that Truth will be and is triumphant.

Your loving student
