You, remember I told you, in a former letter, of a lady who called on me & stated she had just returned from Boston, & had been a Student of Mrs. Stuart. She was surprised and disappointed to find there was anyone here, who knew anything of Metaphysics – She very evidently desired the entire field to herself in her first interview she questioned me very closely – indeed, I thought impertinently. I treated her well, & volunteered to loan her Mrs. A. She said she had a copy of yours & I asked her to loan it to me As Written: tome - After the lapse of a week, she brought me the 1st Vol. very much penciled As Written: pencilled - & every reference to “quackery” heavily underlined & I think of recent date. which I believe was done for my benefit – On the title page under your name was written “for the Author, Mr. Quimby” then at the bottom of the page The Author is erased & reads – By “Mrs. Eddy for Mr. Quimby” making it a palimpsest As Written: palimsest . Later she brought me the 2d Vol. marked the same. She also brought me a card of a firm to send to for your books – I told her I had sent to you & she was so sorry – I told her how I enjoyed the books – how much I would like to know you personally &c. asked her to describe you & I got very indignant at what she told me & said “I do not believe it” in very positive terms – she colored & bit her lip said it was the truth & you were in, “very bad order” in Boston.

was interrupted – I sent however another letter to dated the 29th – I am more & more convinced that someone As Written: some one is practicing “Demonology” on me – Yesterday I suffered terribly & was so completely prostrated I could not treat myself – Is there any way As Written: anyway to protect myself - ? I don’t believe there is a person here practicing Metaphysics purely as you teach – I know of several who use drugs, lotions electricity, plasters, mesmerism, magnetism & Spiritualism­ — All, or nearly all, are Spiritualists –
