My dear Teacher:

While I hold for Dr. Avery, personally, no feeling except friendship & the desire for his success in everything that is right, I fear the plan you have named concerning the admission of his students into our Asso.Editorial Note: The Christian Science Association of Chicago was a branch of the C.S.A in Boston, Massachusetts. will not subserve the ends either of justice or expediency for reasons which I will briefly state

1st I question the qualification as a teacher of one who has never practiced ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science but who on the contrary has persistently practiced in error (medicine). I wish and demand works and not words in this particular, at least, to prove honesty and interest that reaches in some degree beyond the question of self.

2nd The dignity of our Asso.Editorial Note: The Christian Science Association of Chicago was a branch of the C.S.A in Boston, Massachusetts. must suffer before the public from the fact that an M.D. can teach Christian Science and qualify for practice, and membership in this body while his own practice (not his words) attests his greater faith in medicine. What teaching the Dr. has already done has already caused much comment in this way.

3d I fear also that this distinction in favor of Dr. A. would cause serious disaffection among other members who in view of their right practice would fail to see its justice.

4th If Dr. A. is true to the causeEditorial Note: The cause of Christian Science. this test which justice demands will not change him. If he is not ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science will suffer no loss in his revolt.

Now, one word further - A short times since Dr. A. said to me that he intended as soon as possible to confirm his practice to obstetrics and gynecology which is chiefly surgical.

I do not know what this signifies but will state how it struck me and leave it to you. I thought it was an ingenious plan to dodge the mental character of practice which would identify him with Christian Scientists before the public, leaving him where many another M.D. stands at the same time removing the barrier (the use of drugs) which prevents him from coming into the full emoluments as teacher of Christian ScienceAs Written:C.S.

I will state a wish, the integrity of the causeEditorial Note: The cause of Christian Science. its only object - that you do not qualify him as teacher, by normal instruction unless he makes a complete and unconditional surrender of his erroneous practice.

Very RespectfullyAs Written:Respy
