I have been trying to find time to answer your kind noteEditorial Note: This note is not extant., ever since its reception, but there is so much to be done – done – done – always a call, – and this so often reminds me that if this be true of us little ones, how must it be with you – who have heart and hands so full. I realize this more and more every day, and my thought goes out to you with loving tenderness – as I realize, how you have labored and struggled with and for your children, of heart and brain – how you have carried them in your arms tenderly lest As Written: least by some unforeseen As Written: unforseen cause or event they might be torn from you, and brought to grief,– and as I think – it comes to me how hard it is for the earthly parent to realize that the child ever becomes a man, full grown – capable of going out into the world, to work and think for himself and others independently and what a grief it ofttimes As Written: oft-times is to the heart of the parent to give up the child and realize that they have gotten a man from the LordGen 4:1 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord. instead. This comes to me as I think of all your brain & heart children, and look around me upon the great work that is being done by them and see how they do honor to her from whom they have received their inspiration. Do they differ from their teacher? it may be but each must work in his or her own harness, or they cannot work effectually. The child cannot always follow in the footsteps of the father. Is it a grief to the parents when they see the children climbing up the heights above them – Oh no they rejoice with joy unspeakableI Pet 1:8 Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: .– It is the reward they have sought. So it seems to me – you Mrs Eddy – looking abroad over the world, and seeing all the busy workers, earnest & faithful workers who have been inspired by you – and all have been so inspired – doing good – according to the light they have received – giving out strong helpful words & influences to those who follow – I think; how happy Mrs Eddy must be to know that it was given to her to do this great work. You who have started the current and fed it until it has become a stream – beyond the control of mortal – a stream that must move on until it fill the whole earth with the fullness of Truth.
I wrote to youEditorial Note: This letter is not extant. inquiring about Mrs. H.Editorial Note: Probably Emma Curtis Hopkins and Mrs Plunkett and you replied "That they were your bitter enemies"Editorial Note: This reply by Mary Baker Eddy is not extant. — Now my dear teacher; how can that be? I felt so sorrowful for you when I received that reply – for it seemed to me you were crushed and distressed by the burden of your own thought,– from looking at things from the dark side – instead of the illuminated one, and that things could not be so bad as that, and I am glad to say to you that I have seen both of the ladies mentioned since then As Written: them and heard them speak words that glow with the fervor of truth and holiness – and ever and always speaking with the greatest tenderness of you and your work – pointing their pupils ever to "Science & Health,"Editorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy as the great fountain from which to draw inspiration – Never one word of enmity, or one word that can do you harm or injustice,– and to me it has been a glad surprise & pleasure, for I felt that you must have been misinformed.– I realized that I had allowed my dislike of Swartz, and my knowledge of him – to prejudice me against Mrs. P. for her defense of him in class last fall. – and that it would make you as happy as it does me – to know that I misjudged her – and that she had only to know and understand the facts in the case – to realize fully the difference between truth and error. I would not be misunderstood even though I may be misrepresented – and if I who know so little, feel that I must have charity with all laborers in the vineyard of God, goodMatt 20:1 For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard. Matt 20:2 And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard. Matt 20:3 And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, Matt 20:4 And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way. Matt 20:5 Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise. Matt 20:6 And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle? Matt 20:7 They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive. Matt 20:8 So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first. Matt 20:9 And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny. Matt 20:10 But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny. Matt 20:11 And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house, Matt 20:12 Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day. Matt 20:13 But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny? Matt 20:14 Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee. Matt 20:15 Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good? Matt 20:16 So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen. , I can realize that you with your broader vision – purer conception – fuller knowledge – must and can feel nothing but gladness and joy, to have the clouds lift – the dissentions cease – that they may no longer injure the Cause of truth, knowing as you do that Truth is the warrior and will fight the battles for us – if we but stand aside and do not hinder the way by our personalitiesEx 14:14 The Lord shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace. ,– which are but the stumbling blocks, built up by Mortal Mind to keep us out of the kingdom.– I feel myself growing more and more into the work – into a true understanding of the power of God, good, to prevail against all error. I simply stand in my place – speaking as it is given me, trusting that my reward may be the penny a day our Master spoke ofMatt 20:1 For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard. If my capacity is but that of a pint cup and it is full to its greatest capacity – I am doing my part as well as he or she who has the capacity of a gallon or of many gallons, and I know that I am not to be discouraged because I am not equal to my brother or my sister in truth, – and I may not waste my time in contending with this one or that, because they do not mount up the hill of truth to the plain of pure vision by the same road I try to travel,– for I know that each must take the path his or her fitness has marked out for them. Eachand allmust live for themselves the Life. We may help – but cannot hinder or stop their progress – lest As Written: least by so doing we may lose our own footing and be thrown back into discord and darkness. I write these thoughts My dear teacher, because they come crowding to the front and will be heard, and because I would have you know of my state of mind, from myself; and because I look to you for guidance and food. My studies are bringing me more and more into the harmony of the wise and prudent of all ages and I find that all who have been illuminated, see the Truth alike,– because there is but one Truth,– and see also that there are many ways to look at it and describe it, owing to the different reflecting powers of each, and to the difference of the understanding of being. Yet the Truth shines out through all when we have become one with it. I am surprised every day as I read the wisdom of the East and compare with the wisdom of the West to see how exactly alike it is;– and we have only to understand somewhat of the fervid, glowing nature of the Eastern languages & the cold methodical, lifelessness of our own tongue to be able to recognize Truth – the Truth as shadowed forth in the writings of the Good everywhere, when once we have the key – and thanks to you all may now have it.
It is wonderful,– aye very wonderful to think of the state of illumination that may & will come to those who reach a point where all material and physical conditions are lost sight of in the one perception that "all is mind, there is no matter,," and that there is but One Mind, One Truth, One Life, and that One is God. Good." If I understand aright all may strive for that state – and they who attain to victory will be rewarded by Truth, according to their capacity. I believe there are many earnest ones now before the world who have caught glimpses of the Heavenly way and who have been called to the fields already white for the harvestJohn 4:35 Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest. .
How happy you must be to know that to you was given the work of preparation of the way – the making of the paths straight As Written: strait Surely you can rest at peace, knowing that all will be well – that each is but to do his or her work according to the light they have – for so only could it be given as a New Gospel to all the world. All cannot drink from the same cup – though all may drink of the same water. The benediction of Peace to your troubled heart is surely given; and you above all others can cast your burdens on GodPs 55:22 Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved. .
But my dear teacher; Please excuse me for writing so long a letter to you who have scarcely time to read a short one. I have followed only the thoughts as they came, with the hope that they may do good, as tender words of appreciation always do - to the weary worker. Do not feel that you must answer it in full, or at all unless you are so moved. Of course, it is always a pleasure to hear from you directly – but I understand and appreciate all the weight and burden that rests upon your busy head and heart & hands – therefore ask nothing.
One thing has been on my mind to inquire about and that is that in the Journal it is stated that only those who can show Credentials to that effect, have been your students – Signed by you I would like to have such Credentials as belong to the degree I took with you. I suppose it was an oversight last fall – or something that has been given out since – I hope to take another course with you at no very distant day if I may be permitted – but should like that which belongs to me as a C.S.B. Should there be any charges, please let me know. I shall soon need another supply of books as those are all sold – Enclosed please find my "Brick" for this month.
Doctor wishes kindly remembrance.
