Please pardon me for taking your time – for I do so desire to express to you my appreciation of and satisfaction in n the new edition of Science & Health. It is to me the book of books – next the Sacred Word of God. It has brought to me more far more than the old edition – not that it is so very different – but because, I trust, I have grown more fully into the spirit of it, aye to the understanding of its teachings.

Since my return from BostonEditorial Note: Boston, Massachusetts last fall, my time has mostly been spent with myself, trying to over comeCorrected:overcome and grow out of self - into a full realization of the nothingness of matter & the somethingness of truth,- and in this valley of humiliation, I could see and appreciate a statement you made to me in class one day – viz. that my pride of intellect would be the rock against which I should stumble – Then it itAs Written:it seemed uncalled for, – now I see and appreciate the need there was for the dicipline Corrected: discipline that came to me from the reproof. I entered upon this study with my whole might mind and strength – resolved never to stop, nor rest until I had grown into the spirit and truth of the ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science as taught by you. From the first I could feel something within answering back to the truth of your teachings – as it answered back to no other theories or ideas. I read and pondered upon the ideas presented by other writers bearing upon the powers of mind &c.Expanded:et cetera – because I could not satisfy my mind without comparison and knowledge of the claims of all: but allow me to say to you as my testimony – that in no way nor from any other source whatever - have I found the key-noteCorrected:keynote, the true gold - the elixir of life - aye the true Principle of being, as brought out by you. I would not speak until I could say this truly, from my deep seatedCorrected:deep-seated conviction – and now I thank God day and night for this great truth. I see in it, and through it such vast possibilities for the good of all peoples. It has been a slow process with me – this emptying out of preconceived ideas and opinions – because it must be with me, a real growth – not a mush-roonCorrected:mushroom – I could not change in a moment – nor be treated out of my opinions, as I could be out of a belief in rheumatism, as my first teacher, told me he ought to have been able to do. – I wanted and must have a foundation, in truth, that when once laid I should not need to dig up and build over, but could build upon until the whole structure should stand out a perfected [?] Unclear or illegible temple. I read, and heard lectures upon Mind Cure – as presented by some of the best thinkers of the day - (Swartz not included), but in sifting and comparing - I discovered no more similarity between that, though I discover much good:- anCorrected:and the Science of healingEditorial Note: Christian Science, as taught by you – than between day-lightCorrected:daylight and darkness. To me the one is intellectual dominatin Corrected: domination only – the other is the action, and result of the actin Corrected: action of the Spirit under the Law of Creative Thought, the Divine Principle of Being. The process of stripping has not been easy, but the following quotation shows what is attainable, and possible to man, "Man is no sooner stripped of his own lights and graces, and reclothed with the Spirit of God – Principle – than he is placed in Truth, and it is then, he is in a fit state to hear words of Truth."

The coming up out of EgyptEditorial Note: This is an allusion to God bringing the children of Israel out of slavery in Egypt. The account of this is found in the book of Exodus in the Bible., has been long and the wanderings forCorrected:far – but I have ever been comforted - by a promise that came to me in answer to my souls Corrected: soul's cry - seven years ago, while in the depths of doubt & despair, I arose from bed - opened my bible and this was my answer. "Behold I send my anglel, that he may walk before thee, and keep thee in the way: and bring the Corrected: thee into the land which I have prepared for thee."Ex 23:20 ¶Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared. ExadosCorrected:Exodus. I read – reread – and fixed it in my mind without noticing the chapter or verse - and for seven years I searched the book for it but could not find it: but as though the time was now ripe – a few weeks ago - it came to me again while reading the Mystic Sense of the Scriptures. Joy and peace filled my soul – for I had feared I might have mistaken the reading and import of it at first. Truly Gods ways are past finding outRom 11:33 O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! , and the height, depth, breadthEph 3:17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, Eph 3:18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; Eph 3:19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. , aye the immensity of the Divine Principle, is beyond comprehension.

Many times the past few months, while with bleeding heart I have been struggling through the Red SeaEx 14:21 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. Ex 14:22 And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left. , I have remembered you and your bleeding footsteps, as you have bravely struggled up the steeps – to prepare a way for us. Surely you have suffered much and your reward will be great: the reward that comes to a true soul, having the consciousness of singleness of purpose - viz - the glory of God and the good of humanity.

Since I have again commensed Corrected: commenced my work I have been gratified and strength [?] Unclear or illegible ened, by some beautiful demonstrations of the power of the Divine Principle – have also experienced some disappointments in not being able to do all I would have liked to do for the distressed. From these cases I have tried to learn a lesson - and to buckle on the armourEph 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Eph 6:13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Eph 6:14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; Eph 6:15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Eph 6:16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. Eph 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Eph 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; anew – trusting only upon the action of Spirit. My work has been quietly done, most of it in the midst of old timeCorrected:old-time friends and the remembrances of my early efforts as a teacher. There is a wide field there – but the people are very conservative, and very jealous of any seeming encroachments upon old established ways – And yet there are some good thinkers there, who only need enlightenment; Many have heard whisperings - but dare not repeat them, for fear it might be something unpopular or be in some way connected with spiritualism mesmerism – or some other ism – save their isms. I was called there because of the healing of a case by absent treatment–s. A case of 25 years Corrected: years' standing - well known to every bodyCorrected:everybody – The family were old timeCorrected:old-time friends and knew of my studies and practice at home – and wished me to see what I could do for this man. I did so and it led to my visit and to my spending half of my time there - for a few months past. I now feel that the time has come for something more than demonstration - and as I have never used or recommended to be used any books - but yours – and do not wish to for reasons stated above. I have satisfied myself as to the merits of other claims – and know confidently whereof I assert, and do not wish to use any other work where I am to cultivate the field.

It occurred to me that possibly your Historical sketch of Metaphysical Healing might be just what was needed there to prepare the ground for the sowing of the seeds for future growthMatt 13:1 The same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side. I have made a long letter of this - but as it seemed unavoidable, for the full expression of myself to you – which as a learner at your feet, and a deciple Corrected: disciple of your teachings – was due from [?] Unclear or illegible me to you – I trust you will excuse me this time for taxing you so far. I have refrained heretofore - because I realized how fully occupied you were – and because I would not speak until I could speak out of the fullness of my heart and from my siettled and earnest conviction that I had gained a victory over myself – I must grow to it – was my conviction – and I would wait, watch and meditate.

Acts 1:9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. Acts 1:10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; Acts 1:11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. – and a little of the illumination from the truth as taught by you has reached me - and I cannot refrain from giving you my heartfelt testimony hoping it may yield you one little drop of joy to know that another earnest soul or mind has been redeemed by your efforts.

I shall be pleased if it do ever so little to lighten your crossMatt 27:32 And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross. Mark 15:21 And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross. Luke 23:26 And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus. . and help to repel the attacks of malignant mortal minds.

Shall be so pleased to hear just this once if may be from your own hands – tho'Expanded:though I know it is asking much. Yet you know that milk is not so good when it lacks the cream – and good words from you directly would be to me the cream.
