I received your. of the 30th. (dictated)Editorial Note: This letter is not extant. and shall notify. Mrs Sargent at once. Shall I infringe upon your indulgence if I talk to you a little of what the past few days has revealed of where this ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science is leading me. And it has come about in my striving for a closer communion with God. It has come by striving against this consciousness of bodily sense in self. It has come by making every effort to sink self; my own opinions of Science even, out of sight; seeking for a glimpse of the understanding of Love, of Christ. It has revealed more and more, how I must handle Malicious Mesmerism. It has raised me to a height As Written: hight where the - "Thou shalt die,"Gen 2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. and "it is the woman thou hast given me"Gen 3:11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? Gen 3:12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. , are so clearly defined in their spiritual (unreality) significance, that I can no longer mistake the method of handling it. It has revealed clearly my duty toward AEditorial Note: Silas J. Sawyer is probably using the letter “A” in this letter to refer to his wife, Jennie E. Sawyer., and confirms what you have stated. Why such is the effect; that she wrote me a letter, demanding that I shall recede from my position in Science; any further than to do all work for the cause here, in Milwaukee. Of course I refused. There is a something, which can be none other than Christ, telling me to go up higher; to press on in the direction pointed. Let me tell you of the strongest evidence I rely upon for proof. that I am right. I am now teaching a class of the best minds. I have yet had, and teaching it alone; one student is a CongregationalAs Written:Cong'l Clergyman; he. came in suffering from disease. I expected much difficulty with him; and especially when we came to the question of sin. I handle the animal magnetism question, upon this InstituteEditorial Note: Wisconsin Metaphysical Institute, before entering my class each day; and Oh how easy! how grand were the demonstrations, over sin. We led the clergyman out of his theological conceptions, of "actual" and "original" sin: one short struggle and the victory was won for God and Science. He is being healed of his beliefs of disease, without special treatment; what stronger proof need I of spiritual growth. There is a sad part to this; I said I am teaching this class alone: I am impressed with the conviction that unless AEditorial Note: Probably Jennie E. Sawyer changes her attitude; I should not teach another in this house. I have been asked if I would go to the house of one of our wealthy citizens, and teach a small class of four, in August; and I hardly know what to reply. The truth is my teacher, your words return, to "go into large City's and teach alone," so frequently, and it is so in harmony with my desire when I view it in the MastersEditorial Note: Jesus Christ interests, I cannot bring myself As Written: my self to a reply in the affirmative to these requests.
Again I desire to prepare for the Theological course; and take it whenever you consider I am ready. This great question of Christ-Healing is stirring the nation, yes the nations; and they who desire to be ready when the cry, The bridegroom cometh," must continue pouring in fresh oilMatt 25:1 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. Matt 25:2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. Matt 25:3 They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: Matt 25:4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. Matt 25:5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. Matt 25:6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. Matt 25:7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. Matt 25:8 And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. Matt 25:9 But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. Matt 25:10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. Matt 25:11 Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. Matt 25:12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. Matt 25:13 Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh. . Why my leader I claim to read somewhat the signs of these timesMatt 16:1 The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven. Matt 16:2 He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red. Matt 16:3 And in the morning, It will be foul weather to-day: for the sky is red and lowering. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times? Matt 16:4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed. . I notice how the mind-cure folk are posing before the public, as Scientists. In a chicago paper Swarts, has lately made his fling at Christian Scientists'As Written:Scientists. claim, that there is no matter; whereas he claims "mind produces matter, but produces it as mind." He will be left to pick his matter bone alone I think. Again Mrs Plunkett is out in the "Alpha" in a long article and AdsAs Written:Ad's. So they run, but if the Christian Scientists are watchfulAs Written:watchfull; Truth will triumphAs Written:triunph; and we can reap a glorious reward.
I do see also the very urgent necessity for more active workers for our causeEditorial Note: The cause of Christian Science., and less attention to individual interests. Students should be more alive to the self-dec eptiveness of their own beliefs, their motives and methods. This thought that the whole of, and most important part of Science is comprised in treating disease, is beguiling very many into a stereotyped method of practice. divid ing us, and drifting us, to lose sight of the more vital object; working for the whole of Science, a perfect harmonious union. I do not, in this disparage healing; not at all; on the contrary, my conception of Science as you teach it is, the mo re we work for the cause, making that the first effort, we become better healers.
In the broader line of duty, there is an exclusion of narrowness, selfishness and ambition. Doing the will of the Father unites us in the great brotherhood of Jesus.Matt 12:50 For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother. I talk this to others, and try to practice it likewise. With such an object before me; I do not believe I wrong AEditorial Note: Probably Jennie E. Sawyer or misjudge her; when, in my propositions to contribute toward building a church in B–Editorial Note: Boston, Massachusetts and she opposes on the ground that we can do more for Science nearer home with such a contribution; I observe silence toward her in all of the plans for outside work; purposing to go ahead and work for the MasterEditorial Note: Jesus Christ alone.
I had hoped A was yielding, and trust she may yet do so. I shall continue my arrangements, and leave her here; that there may be no sign of disturbance to others; and when A sees I am once really absent; she will awaken to the gravity of the situation; and that it is no childish nonsense, as she terms my position. Knowing as I now do, that our real Life is God; I have, and am nothing of myself, it all belongs to Him, and when I have partially broken away from the environments of a false sense of life; how can I ever turn back, or listen again to the temptations of sense; even though I appear cruel, and without affection to a wife in so doing.
I do not yet get free, from occasional returns of the belief of ear Etc; but it no longer troubles me; whatever it is, I know God will reveal in me. I am glad to suffer it out; so that I know sin is going out with it. What a tenacious hold materiality has on me, but thanks be to God who giveth us the victoryI Cor 15:57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. through the leadings of Divine Science
