My dispatchEditorial Note: This dispatch is not extant. relating to Miss Scholfield you have before this. We never met Miss S- but her sister Margret, was treated, and healed, by Mrs Sawyer which converted the family to ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science. They are bankers in WasauEditorial Note: Wausau, Wisconsin. I am acquainted with others there, made partial preparations once to lecture there, and now, when Miss Virginia learns the scienceEditorial Note: Christian Science, the opportunity to plant our standard will be more propitious of success, because they will aid us. God is leading us, and using us to do good; and we have done some good; wish to do more.
There are many things I would like to write of the causeEditorial Note: The cause of Christian Science in the west, but will only take your time to ask you to explain a phase of mortal mind that has presented itself in both Mrs Sawyer & self within the past three months. I have dated it from the appearance of Mrs Newman in this section, but I do not like to make a mistake in handling it. Mrs Sawyer has been attacked by what seemed a belief of poison; it was characterized by raised red patches over the body, accompanied by itching burning, and a violent cough.
Myself; was, and is now all the symptoms of catarrh in head, rheumatism etc.
We have handled it as malicious mortal mind. We have included Mrs Newman in our arguments, also Mrs Silsbee; in the following method; that "they could not be made the medium, or reflections of malice or hate, or poison, or disease." Should we have argued against them direct, or urge any penalty.
The results of our arguments have been so varying, that I am constrained to ask you this question. For days I would be entirely free from them, then a return in full force. Mrs Sawyer has made a slow but steady gain. It is the slowness, and returns, that caused us to consider that perhaps we were not handling it scientifically. After the first arguments, we dropped As Written: droped the namesEditorial Note: A. B. (Anna B.) Newman and Fannie M. Silsbee, but remembering that frequently afterward the names would arise in thought, has led me to think perhaps that also was by reason of "their" arguments, or an error in our method of handling.
Mrs Eddy how forcibly this reminds me of the necessity of more spirituality, to discern the "signs of these times."Matt 16:1 The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven. Matt 16:2 He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red. Matt 16:3 And in the morning, It will be foul weather to-day: for the sky is red and lowering. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?
There has so much presented itself in our experience of late, that is anomalous, when viewed from the standpoint of the physical senses; and so frequent have they become of late, that I begin to doubt my own abilities to demonstrate as I believe I should.
All I have or expect to have, is thrown into the side of the scale for scienceEditorial Note: Christian Science; hence I must believe God will recognize our offering; at least we do not cease our importunities.
If I carry out the plan lecturing and teaching whenever opportunity offers, I feel that the stimulus As Written: stimulous of the prayers of our AssociationEditorial Note: This is a reference to a branch association of the Christian Scientist Association in Boston, Massachusetts. will not come amissJames 4:3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. . Also, if I could pass a week or two in BostonEditorial Note: Boston, Massachusetts, with you, it would strengthen us in many weak points; so you see I am anticipating your next normal class. I hope I can know the date a couple weeks in advance.
Mrs Sawyer unites in a Merry Joyous Christmas and New Years to you and Christian Science.
