Dear Teacher:

From a standpoint of courtesy an apology is due you for non-acknowledgement of your letter of June 16thEditorial Note: This letter is not extant.. In the disappointments of the best of plans to do good, the struggle of Truth against Error assumes mighty proportions, and blessed is that one who clings to his Principle; and seeks the supreme Wisdom. Such a struggle as was inaugurated the day you arrived in CEditorial Note: Chicago – I was illy prepared for, and yet thankfulAs Written:thankfull am I to my God for leading me through it all, and to take the stand I did.

From that eventful day on; in which Truth was revealed clearer. than ever. – that God’s ways are not man’s ways. I determined, even as Paul, “not to know anything (of self) save Jesus Christ and him crucified.”I Cor 2:2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.

I have worked for only a higher understanding of divine Science; that I might reach nearer the Spirit of demonstration; to apprehend, even in a small part, whereof I am apprehendedI Cor 13:12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. .

And it seemed in order to success there were a multitude of temptations to overcome, the particulars of which I will not tire you to enumerate.

I had learned “that in me, dwelt no good thing; to will was present with me; but how to perform that which is good. I find not.”Rom 7:14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. Rom 7:15 For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. Rom 7:16 If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. Rom 7:17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. Rom 7:18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. Rom 7:19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. Rom 7:20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. Rom 7:21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. Rom 7:22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: Rom 7:23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. Rom 7:24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? Rom 7:25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin. I know not how to begin again in Christian Science.

Applications to teach, to come and heal, and orders for books, and letters of inquiry came in. I refused to teach, those who sought the healing power of Truth, we worked to demonstrate, and the results glorious.

After a time, from entirely unexpected and unsolicited quarters a class of five was formed. Some could pay a little, some nothing, but they were all excellent, strong characters. I deliberated seriously, whether I ought to try and teach, but it seemed impossible to escape. I can assure you, I only desire as I pledged you when in Boston, to work to promote the causeEditorial Note: The cause of Christian Science.. and I desire now to be known by my fruitMatt 7:15 ¶Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Matt 7:16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Matt 7:17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. Matt 7:18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Matt 7:19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Matt 7:20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. .

I did teach this class, which I know now, God chose me to do. and I doubt not you will say “Amen.” to my work when I tell you that every one of the five are demonstrating “Christian Science.” and three of them, have had remarkable results in their work. One of them was called to a case of ConsumptionEditorial Note: tuberculosis on a Monday, and Wednesday morning the patient went to his work, and has continued work since. it was a case of two and a half years standing. The patient had done no work for a year, was confined to bed, sleepless; night sweats; and a cough so bad, the neighbors would close windows at night to shut out the sound.

I know we taught these students “Christian Science.” for I know no other science, or system of healing only as you taught me.

Shall I take the work of these students as evidence of my fitness to teach? and continue such work, is the question that presents itself now.

Christian Science is again started in Milwaukee, and this time upon a right basis, there is no flourish about it. but the effect is seen, in the inquires made by a class of seekers, whom you would rejoice to meet.

Also there seems to be a revival of interest from distant States, regarding the “College” teaching, agencies for “S & H.”Editorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. Some I have referredAs Written:refered to you. others write, you have referredAs Written:refered them to me.

If you desire to impress the public interest, in any enterprise, give that enterprise a position of dignity and permanence. Therefore I have contemplated issuing a circular, to send to inquirers: in the circular I should set forth the advantage of class teaching, the instituting of a School for that purpose, and this School incorporated under our State laws.

This institute not in any way to conflict with the Mass – Metaphysical College, but rather subordinate. or, for the convenience of those unable to go to Boston. – This perspective has presented itself to me: and if it meets your approval I will try and carry it out.

Your approval I say? perhaps more properly I might say, if you do not object, because I do not wish it to appear as a bid for favors to myself, but to benefit, and further the interests of ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science whether in Mass, - California, or Wisconsin

We hold weekly meetings at my house, and students are bringing in friends, when we try to place Christian Science before them. the results of these meetings are plainly seen, by the inquiries made from outsiders.

I have had inquires of late in regard to agencies for “S & H.”Editorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. heretofore I have referredAs Written:refered them to you, because I was not in a situation to supply them at a profit to the Agent.

At the present date there are no booksEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. to be had either here or Chicago; that I know of. My present financial condition only permits me to say, if you are agreeable to it, to send me two Doz – Set at $2.00Editorial Note: $2.00 in 1884 is the equivalent of $55.38 in 2017. per set, delivered here, I will remit on receipt of same, and supply these Agents who desire small lots.

Please give it early attention, as I have some parties awaiting repliesAs Written:reply’s to their inquiries.
