Editorial Title: Silas J. Sawyer to Mary Baker Eddy, February 14, 1884
Author: Silas J. Sawyer
Recipient: Mary Baker Eddy
Date: February 14, 1884
Manuscript Description: Handwritten by Silas J. Sawyer from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Editorial Note: Sawyer writes to tell Mary Baker Eddy that his patient, Charles Briggs, has died. Sawyer is trying to figure out why Briggs died under Sawyer's care as a Christian Science practitioner. He feels that one possibility is that he did not take sufficiently into account the mortal thoughts of Briggs' family and friends about the case. The other possibility, which seems to Sawyer more likely, is that he is not a safe demonstrator of Christian Science--that he understands Christian Science from only the standpoint of human reason and does not possess enough of its spirit to undertake to heal difficult cases. He also refers to the mental malpractice and mesmerism of Edward J. Arens and Richard Kennedy and wonders if Clara Choate might have heard of the case and worked against him. Nonetheless, Sawyer is determined to press on with Christian Science and not give up. He asks that Eddy reply to his letter and tell him of anything she discovers in him that is wrong.
