Your very welcome letter of the 9thEditorial Note: This letter is not extant. was duly received. Contents carefully noted.

You ask me to write you a letter that will show you that I at least understand you, and will help others to. et ceteraAs Written:&c. My dear Teacher, I think that I do understand As Written: undertsand you, very fully, and I think too that I understand where all of this seeming difficulty comes from, and how it comes. And now my dearAs Written:dera, in writing to you I must as far as I do write, write statements of Truth, and nothing else. For I must be as honest with you as I want you to be with me. I cannot do otherwiseAs Written:other wise, in short I dare not tell you anythingAs Written:any thing else. I am holding myself to be led by Truth, and Truth only.

Therefore I must follow the leadings of Truth.

I know too that that is your only desire, that Truth shall lead you into all TruthJohn 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. . And I believe most fully that if left to your own leadings, that you will be led by Truth in all that you do and say. Justice to you and to the CauseEditorial Note: The cause of Christian Science. that we so dearly love, compels As Written: compells me to be frank in stating to you what I shall in this letter. As I trust you are aware, through all of this controversy of the last four years, I have quietly attended to my own work which has seemed to be sent to me to do, and left all of this controversy to those who thought it was their business "to steady the Ark,"II Sam 6:1 Again, David gathered together all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. II Sam 6:2 And David arose, and went with all the people that were with him from Baale of Judah, to bring up from thence the ark of God, whose name is called by the name of the Lord of hosts that dwelleth between the
cherubims.
II Sam 6:3 And they set the ark of God upon a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab that was in Gibeah: and Uzzah and
Ahio, the sons of
Abinadab, drave the new cart.
II Sam 6:4 And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab which was at Gibeah, accompanying the ark of God: and
Ahio went before the ark.
II Sam 6:5 And David and all the house of Israel played before the Lord on all manner of instruments made of fir wood, even on harps, and on psalteries, and on timbrels, and on cornets, and on cymbals. II Sam 6:6 ¶And when they came to
Nachon’s threshingfloor, Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark of God, and took hold of it; for the oxen shook it.
II Sam 6:7 And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God. II Sam 6:8 And David was displeased, because the Lord had made a breach upon Uzzah: and he called the name of the place Perez–uzzah to this day.
and thus try to control affairs. And gladly would I continue to do so even at the present time, but as YOU have asked me to speak, I feel that I must do so.

And in doing it, I shall only state what I know, and not what someoneAs Written:some one else has told me. And I shall do it guided only by a spirit of love to all, with malice to none. I know that Truth KNOWS ALL, and if I am led by any other spirit, I shall be the one to suffer, and not another.

Now my Dear, I am not going to repeat the statements of falsehood As Written: falshood and error which I know has been reported to you so continuously for the last four years or more, which have been the result of jealousyAs Written:jelousey, envy, et ceteraAs Written:&c but simply state things that I know.

I need not speak of my earnest love and devotion to you and the Truth Taught me through your Books and Teachings personally, as everyoneAs Written:every one who knows me knows that, as my teachings all the way tells its own story, but with all of this, IT does not compare with that of Mr Adams. I feel that I do know that you have never taught a Student in any form who has stood as faithfully to you and your teachings as he has. Or at least any more so.) In everythingAs Written:every thing, notwithstanding what has been done and said in the past. And I think that positive evidence will prove that no one who has taught Christian Scienc[*]Gap: letter.Reason: page cut. has always given more fully credit As Written: credid to you in all talking, and teachings as well as in his writings.

If you will read for yourself the Preface to his Book "Twenty Five Lessons in Truth Healing", you will see what he says there. And in everythingAs Written:every thing he writes as far as I have ever seen, he does either give the Name, or else puts in quotation marks. These things stand in black and white, so that no other proof is needed to substantiate what I say.

Now then as to the statement which you have been told "that he would like a million dollars to publish Mrs. Gestefeld's work that libelled me," I dont know who told you that, nor does it make any sort of difference, but I feel that I know whereof I affirm, that that is an unqualified falsity. I know it to be so utterly unlike anythingAs Written:any thing that Mr Adams has ever said.

But I have heard him say many, many times both publicly and privately, that he wished he had a million dollars to circulate Science & HealthEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy all over, not only this country but Europe. There are hundreds here in this City who have heard him make the same statement. And do you suppose that If he felt like that, that he would want to circulate something that would libel the character of the Author of the Book that was so dear to him, and that he wanted to send broadcast over the world? NO. NO. I answer a thousand times NO. It is not like the man at all.

No matter what peculiarities or mannerism of his own he may have, this one thing is certain, he cannot lie, he cannot deceive, there is not one bit of what the world calls policy about him, he is frank and open and all that he does is open and above board.

He does not tell you one thing to your face, and another behind your back. You can rely upon what he says as being his honest conviction of right. I know of no one, whom I think is governed any more fully by what they think is Truth than he is. I will not except anyoneAs Written:any one. It is Principle that governs, and not opinions. Now my dear, I do not say this to you because he is my husband, but because I believe it to be statements of truth,. I think that I have had as good an opportunity to know him as anyoneAs Written:any one after living with him now over 16 years. And they have been years that would test the man I can assure you if anythingAs Written:any thing could. I don’t say this because we always think alike, for we do not. There are many things in which we differ widely as to methods, ways and means et ceteraAs Written:&c.

But that does not change the principle of either of us in the least. And Principle is the only thing that will stand the test of seeming adversity. And if we have not that which will stand the test of the furnace, although it may be heated "seven time hotter than it is wont,"Dan 3:1 Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height was threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof six cubits: he set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon. Dan 3:2 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king sent to gather together the princes, the governors, and the captains, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, to come to the dedication of the image which
Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up.
Dan 3:3 Then the princes, the governors, and captains, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, were gathered together unto the dedication of the image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up; and they stood before the image that
Nebuchadnezzar had set up.
Dan 3:4 Then an herald cried aloud, To you it is commanded, O people, nations, and languages, Dan 3:5 That at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, dulcimer, and all kinds of music, ye fall down and worship the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king hath set up: Dan 3:6 And whoso falleth not down and worshippeth shall the same hour be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. Dan 3:7 Therefore at that time, when all the people heard the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and all kinds of music, all the people, the nations, and the languages, fell down and worshipped the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up. Dan 3:8 ¶Wherefore at that time certain
Chaldeans came near, and accused the Jews.
Dan 3:9 They spake and said to the king Nebuchadnezzar, O king, live for ever. Dan 3:10 Thou, O king, hast made a decree, that every man that shall hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of music, shall fall down and worship the golden image: Dan 3:11 And whoso falleth not down and worshippeth, that he should be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. Dan 3:12 There are certain Jews whom thou hast set over the affairs of the province of Babylon, Shadrach,
Meshach, and Abed–nego; these men, O king, have not regarded thee: they serve not thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.
Dan 3:13 ¶Then
Nebuchadnezzar in his rage and fury commanded to bring
Shadrach,
Meshach, and Abed–nego. Then they brought these men before the king.
Dan 3:14 Nebuchadnezzar spake and said unto them, Is it true, O
Shadrach,
Meshach, and Abed–nego, do not ye serve my gods, nor worship the golden image which I have set up?
Dan 3:15 Now if ye be ready that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of music, ye fall down and worship the image which I have made; well: but if ye worship not, ye shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace; and who is that God that shall deliver you out of my hands? Dan 3:16 Shadrach,
Meshach, and Abed–nego, answered and said to the king, O
Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter.
Dan 3:17 If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. Dan 3:18 But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up. Dan 3:19 ¶Then was
Nebuchadnezzar full of fury, and the form of his visage was changed against
Shadrach,
Meshach, and Abed–nego: therefore he spake, and commanded that they should heat the furnace one seven times more than it was wont to be heated.
Dan 3:20 And he commanded the most mighty men that were in his army to bind Shadrach,
Meshach, and Abed–nego, and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace.
Dan 3:21 Then these men were bound in their coats, their hosen, and their hats, and their other garments, and were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace. Dan 3:22 Therefore because the king’s commandment was urgent, and the furnace exceeding hot, the flame of the fire slew those men that took up Shadrach,
Meshach, and Abed–nego.
Dan 3:23 And these three men, Shadrach,
Meshach, and Abed–nego, fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace.
Dan 3:24 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonied, and rose up in haste, and spake, and said unto his counsellors, Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said unto the king, True, O king. Dan 3:25 He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God. Dan 3:26 ¶Then
Nebuchadnezzar came near to the mouth of the burning fiery furnace, and spake, and said,
Shadrach,
Meshach, and Abed–nego, ye servants of the most high God, come forth, and come hither. Then
Shadrach,
Meshach, and Abed–nego, came forth of the midst of the fire.
Dan 3:27 And the princes, governors, and captains, and the king’s counsellors, being gathered together, saw these men, upon whose bodies the fire had no power, nor was an hair of their head singed, neither were their coats changed, nor the smell of fire had passed on them. Dan 3:28 Then Nebuchadnezzar spake, and said, Blessed be the God of
Shadrach,
Meshach, and Abed–nego, who hath sent his angel, and delivered his servants that trusted in him, and have changed the king’s word, and yielded their bodies, that they might not serve nor worship any god, except their own God.
Dan 3:29 Therefore I make a decree, That every people, nation, and language, which speak any thing amiss against the God of Shadrach,
Meshach, and Abed–nego, shall be cut in pieces, and their houses shall be made a dunghill: because there is no other God that can deliver after this sort.
Dan 3:30 Then the king promoted Shadrach,
Meshach, and Abed–nego, in the province of Babylon.
we are not to be relied upon at As Written: al all.

We want that which will hold us in tempest and sunshine alike.

Now my Dear, you say that "If I have wronged your husband, I am willing to confess it and ask his pardon," now I must tell you just as frankly what I think of that as I have of the rest. I not only think you have wronged him, but I know it. And it has been done publicly, and I feel that the atonement should be done just as publicly, and through the same channel as the statement was made. Namely, through the JOURNAL.

Could you see the letters that have come to us since that article was published in the August JournalEditorial Note: See “Advice to Students” by Mary Baker G. Eddy on pages 179-183 of the August 1891 Christian Science Journal., and caused by that Article, you would then see a little of what I see so much. The PUBLIC demands this, and the Cause we so dearly love demands it. You are not in a position to see and know what we know here by any means.

There are very many I find who have never forgotten the injustice which was done to Mr. Adams by that so-calledAs Written:so called "Chicago Vote," which was published in the JournalEditorial Note: See “Chicago Vote” on page 49 of the April 1888 issue of The Christian Science Journal. This was a request from the pastor and directors of the Church of Christ (Scientist) of Chicago that the card listing Joseph A. Adams as a practitioner and teacher of Christian Science be removed from the Journal due to his affiliating with metaphysical “schools” not loyal to Christian Science., and because that was never righted, I know that the Journal has lost very many subscribers, who are noble-thinkingAs Written:noble thinking people and who will not tolerate such seeming injustice. I have had this to contend with all these years as I have tried to get people to subscribe for the Journal. I think I may safely say, that hundreds of times that very thing has been thrust in my face, and asked if I was willing to stand quietly by and witness not only, but encourage that sort of thing. And if I did, they should not have any more confidence in my Christianity than in the ones who published it. And as I have stood staunchly and earnestly advocating Science and Health and for its Author, they have (mildly or vigorously just as they have been wrought up by the matter), referred me to the threat or prosecution to him just after he left Miss BrownEditorial Note: In late 1886, after taking a Normal Class in October with Mary Baker Eddy at the Massachusetts Metaphysical College, Eddy sent Adams to Chicago to work with Ellen Brown Linscott in the Chicago Christian Science Institute, formed for teaching Christian Science. In February 1887 he dissolved his partnership with Linscott..

It has not been by strangers to him, but those who have known his everydayAs Written:every day life and Teachings for years.

Those are the ones today As Written: to-day who are speaking on this matter. They say they have reason to know whereof they affirm when they do speak.

But amid all of this I have still gone on with my own way and work, and never swerved to the right or leftProv 4:25 Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee. Prov 4:26 Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established. Prov 4:27 Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil. , but stood firmly by you and your work. This is the first time that I have ever felt that I must speak but now it is to you that I do it. And I do it from a sense of duty to all concerned, because you ask it of me. I could not speak at all without doing it honestly, frankly, and lovingly. Doing as I would be done by.Matt 7:12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. Luke 6:31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.

Let me assure you of this one thing of which I am fully satisfied, that YOU of yourself never would have done just as you have in some things, if you had been left unbiassed by the thoughts of others.

I feel sure that you know Mr A. well enough to know that he would not knowingly wrong a single person on earth, in thought, word or deed. And he certainly would not one whom he has loved and honored as he has you from the first. He has been very greatly censured by very many to my positive knowledge for his loyalty and perfect devotion to you, in the past.

But I must stop. I did not think to take so much time, but if I answered you at all, I could not do less that I have.

And I know that you wanted me to answer you honestly, or not at all.

I trust you will excuse this haste in writing, and accept my warmest Christian love to my much-lovedAs Written:much loved Teacher.

Please let me hear from you as you may be led to do it.

Faithfully Yours,
Mrs. J. A. D. Adams, M.D.

Dan 3:30 Then the king promoted Shadrach,
Meshach, and Abed–nego, in the province of Babylon.
we are not to be relied upon al Corrected: at all.

We want that which will hold us in tempest and sunshine alike.

Now my Dear, you say that "If I have wronged your husband, I am willing to confess it and ask his pardon," now I must tenll you just as frankly what I think of that as I have of the rest.

Adams by that so calledCorrected:so-called "Chicago Vote," which was published in the JournalEditorial Note: See “Chicago Vote” on page 49 of the April 1888 issue of The Christian Science Journal. This was a request from the pastor and directors of the Church of Christ (Scientist) of Chicago that the card listing Joseph A. Adams as a practitioner and teacher of Christian Science be removed from the Journal due to his affiliating with metaphysical “schools” not loyal to Christian Science., and because that was never righted, I know that the Journal has lost very many subsrcribers, who are noble thinkingCorrected:noble-thinking people and who will not tolerate such seeming injustice. I have had this to contend with all these years as I have tried to get people to subscribe for the Journal. I think I may safely say, that hundreds of times that very thing has been thrust in my face, and asked if I was willing to stand quietly by and witness not only, but encourage that sort of thing. And if I did, they should not have any more confidence in my cChristianity than in the ones who published it.

It has not been by strangers to him, but those who have known his every dayCorrected:everyday life and Teachings for years.

Those are the ones to-day Corrected: today who are speaking on this matter. They say they have reason to know whereof they affirm when they do speak.

But amid all of this I have tstill gone on with my own way and work, and never wswerved to the right or leftProv 4:25 Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee. Prov 4:26 Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established. Prov 4:27 Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil. , but stood firmly by you and your work. This is the first time that I have ever felt that I must pspeak but now it is to youa that I do it.

He has been very greatly celnsured by very many to my positive knowledge for his loyality and perfect devotion to you, in the past.

But I must stop. I did not think to take so much time, but if I answered you at all, I could not do less that I have.

And I know that you wanted me to answer you honestly, or not at all.

I trust you will excuse this haste in writing, and accept my warmest Christian love to my much lovedCorrected:much-loved Teacher.

Please let me hear from you as you may be led to do it.

Faithfully Yours,
Mrs. J. A. D. Adams, M.D.
