My Dear Sister Eddy

I dont know as we ought to be grieved at what other people do, but sometimes it seems as though we could not entirely subdue the human When last months JournalEditorial Note: The April 1888 issue of The Christian Science Journal. came, & I looked it over & saw that notice of the Action of the Committe of the Chicago ChurchEditorial Note: See “Chicago Vote” on page 49 of the April 1888 issue of The Christian Science Journal. This was a request from the pastor and directors of the Church of Christ (Scientist) of Chicago that the card listing Joseph A. Adams as a practitioner and teacher of Christian Science be removed from the Journal due to his affiliating with metaphysical “schools” not loyal to Christian Science., I must say I was very much grieved. Not at the action so much as at the publication of it in the Journal. Now that Journal comes here, where Mr A is well known, & they know his spirit, much better than either the BostonEditorial Note: Boston, Massachusetts or the ChicagoEditorial Note: Chicago, Illinois people do, now I am occupying the position of an outsider in this matter, & yet the people have, all known me, & known my position. Still I am where I can take in the whole situation of affairs & I trust thoroughly unbiasedAs Written:unbiassed. Whilst I am free to say to you that there are some of his positions that I do not endorse in the slightest, still I must say this, that if all of those parties who are fighting him, manifested one half of the Christian Spirit that he does in all of this matter, they would certainly do very differently from what they do, and instead of turning other people against them & their work, they would draw them to them. If they had just kept entirely still & gone on with their own work & have let him entirely alone, as far as all of this public notice has been concerned, it does seem to me that it would have been very much better for the causeEditorial Note: The cause of Christian Science.. You have no idea of the feeling here & in other places that I know of about it. So many here have ordered the BostonAs Written:B. Journal stopped, but I have begged them to continue on with it.

I do so much regret this whole thing, more than words can express. I sometimes wonder what will come next.

I very much hope if you go to Chicago, that you will see Mr A– for yourself, & not let those Jealousies As Written: Jealosies which are running wild As Written: will there keep you from knowing the truth of this whole matter. All I wish is for Truth to control all things

Excuse this haste in writing Ever your loving & faithful As Written: faithfull Student
